Why we keep coming back to Northreach Church Camp
Next weekend our family will be heading back to Crystal Creek for the annual Northreach Baptist Church camp.
We have been attending church camp since our son was born. The way we attend has changed over that time, and the mix of families and people who come along changes a little from year to year, but we keep coming back.
Part of that is the people. Camp creates space to spend time together without rushing off to the next thing. Conversations carry on over a meal, beside a tent or while the children are playing. There is time for Bible teaching and worship, but also time to simply be present with people from across the church community.
The location is a big part of it too.
A place that suits a community camp
Crystal Creek Caravan Park has large sites, plenty of room to spread out and the sort of atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down for a weekend. Once the sun goes down, the night sky is something else.

The Crystal Creek Community Hall is also an excellent asset for the area. It sits close to the campground, so moving between the campsite and the sessions is only an easy stroll. That simple layout makes a real difference, particularly when families are bringing children, chairs, water bottles and everything else that seems to travel with us.
The community association responsible for the hall is currently working through refurbishment works. It will be great to see the result once those improvements are complete. Their Crystal Creek Community Hall Facebook page is the best place to follow that work.
One of those quiet Crystal Creek evenings when the sky becomes part of the experience.
A slightly different camp for us this year
This year my son and I will be camping on our own. It will be a slightly different experience for our family, but one I am looking forward to.
We will have time together, time around the campsite and time with others from church. I am also looking forward to hearing from Ian Hussey from Morling College as we explore this year’s theme, Everyday Faith, and what it means to follow Jesus in our ordinary lives. Ian is Morling’s Associate Dean of Bible & Theology in Queensland and also serves as a Regional Minister with Queensland Baptists.
I think that is one of the things church camp does particularly well. It takes us out of our usual routines without needing to take us far away. For a few days, the normal interruptions quieten down and there is room to listen, reflect and enjoy being part of a community.
The 2026 Northreach Church Camp runs from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 August at Crystal Creek Community Centre. It is open to people coming on their own, with friends, as couples or as families.
For us, it has become one of those weekends that marks the year. The people may change, our own circumstances may change, and camp can look a little different each time. Still, there is something lovely about returning to the same creek, the same campground and the same easy walk to the hall, ready to spend a weekend learning and living alongside others.
